Caregiver Counselling
Do you find it hard to accomplish all of your caregiving tasks?
You might be feeling stressed, sadness or burnt out.
Is your physical and mental health starting to pay a price?
Caregivers are pillars of strength and support in our community. Unfortunately, it’s common for caregivers to feel unsupported in their roles and experience stress and exhaustion stemming from their complex and often relentless set of responsibilities.
Caregivers often experience physiological and mental health issues that range from disturbed sleep, diet disruption and financial stress to isolation, anxiety, depression and grief. If you are a caregiver in need of support, Mind Path Therapy can help.
Caregiver Stress
Does it seem like there just aren’t enough hours in the day to accomplish all your caregiving tasks? Like so many caregivers, are you struggling with stress, sadness and burnout related to your caregiving role? Do you feel your physical and mental health are starting to pay a price? If the day-to-day demands of caregiving are taking a toll on your wellbeing, it’s okay and important to ask for help.
Caregiver counselling will provide an outlet for you to express your feelings and frustrations about your caregiving role. In our sessions, you will develop strategies to manage your stress, anxiety or low mood as well as the tools to cope with your day-to-day responsibilities. Together, we will work on setting practical and attainable goals for everyone involved.
Navigating the Health Care System
Today’s bureaucratic health care system is complex and tricky to navigate. As a primary advocate, it’s reasonable to feel frustrated and confused by all the red tape when trying to help a loved one in your care. I understand these challenges and am here to support you through this necessary, but often intimidating process.
Caregiver counselling will empower you with the knowledge and communication skills you need to achieve better health care outcomes.
Caregiver Grief Counselling
Caregiver grief is a serious, yet often overlooked, area of distress for caregivers. In your capacity as a caregiver, you may be experiencing social isolation and feelings of sadness stemming from a loss in social connection. A decline in your loved-one’s health status (either physical or cognitive) can trigger deep emotional pain while an increase in your caregiver burden may cause strain in other areas of your life. You may be feeling like you’re losing your sense of identity separate from your caregiving role.
Caregiver counselling will provide a safe and supportive environment for you to grieve these losses and re-establish connections to the most essential parts of yourself. Drawing from principles of grief counselling and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), you will start reconnecting to your values and rediscovering purpose and meaning as a caregiver.
Care Planning and Accessing Community Services
Caregiving can be a 24/7 job that doesn’t come with a roadmap. It can be stressful and all-consuming, particularly if you don’t have access to respite programs or support groups. As a caregiver, you may feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders with nobody to lean on for support. Being a primary caregiver is no easy feat, but support is available.
A psychotherapist experienced in caregiver counselling can help you sort through the difficult and often conflicting emotions you’re experiencing and help you access the resources you and your loved one need during this challenging time.
